Is there life after the commute?

What is the best business to start, to escape the commute, live anywhere and build a secure future?

If you have found yourself here on this page, it's probably because you you're looking for alternatives away from the endless commute, to become financially self-reliant, and you LOVE the idea of being able to live anywhere, then you've come to the right place.

Especially in this post-pandemic world, people have become very aware of the risky nature of a corporate career, and have also seen the reality of working from home as quite an attractive alternative. It has been reported in various sources that over 40% of commuters would take a pay-cut to work closer to home. In a normal world, when it does return to normal, it will be back to leaving the house before 6AM and returning at 7PM'ish, to see the kids for and hour and that's the end of your day. Added to this the increased lack of job security due to downturns, downsizing or simply mergers and 'streamlining of operations post-pandemic' and a corporate job does not seem to be all it's cracked up to be.

More and more people, especially those who may be mid-to late career, are looking for a realistic way to start a business while still working a day job, just to cover themselves and have a more secure future. The number one thing people, and this may include you, like this tend to want to know - is if it's realistic to replace their income before leaving their job to focus on the business full time. As Jim Rohn, mentor to Tony Robbins, once said, "I spend my days working on my career and my evenings, working on my fortune".

I can tell you now, without a shadow of a doubt, that it absolutely is realistic and more so than ever in today's digital world. It is also feasible that, even if the worst has already come to be and you find yourself looking for a new role, for whatever reason, you can rebuild and with a bit of imagination and determination, rebuild towards a much better future, well away from the dreaded commute to a job where, let's face it, 60%+ people, would rather avoid ... if there was any other way.

In my own case, a few years ago, after a pretty full career working on various projects in international oil and gas, the bottom fell out of the market. Suddenly, I felt the brunt of a major corporate downturn. Until that point, I was fairly comfortable with everything in place for a retirement, but not quite there. My best laid plans still had several years to run. It really looked grim!

Suddenly, everything had changed, and I had no choice but to rebrand and re-build. I started by buying a franchise as an energy advisor. While I reasoned that it was close to my previous calling, it turned out that all I had really done was invest my hard earned pension fund and savings, in a job! How crazy was that? Certainly wasn't the lifestyle that I was used to, or fancied going forwards.

More recently, I started looking at the possibilities to build an online business promoting products and services across the world.

This time, I didn't want to make the same mistake, or take the same risk as I did with the franchise. I wanted to learn the process of making money online in affiliate and product marketing, from someone who had already made it, and genuinely wanted to see me make it. I also wanted to minimise the risk to my already dwindling retirement fund! What I also found was really important to me was, not just the fact I wanted to be able to make money with my own business. I also wanted to find something I could really believe in. I wanted to follow the advice of one of my favourite motivational gurus Tony Robbins and set myself up with a business that would not just bring success, but fulfilment too.

“Success without fulfilment is the ultimate failure”. - Tony Robbins.

What kind of business can you build part-time ... and still keep your full-time job?

Ideally, as Robert Kiyosaki, of 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' fame puts it, you should start with anything that is very product-driven and extremely easy to fulfil on. You should have products you believe in and feel confident selling. The product needs to be one that you can sell many times over, every week, without spending a lot of your personal time on customer service and support, or transactions. After all, the last thing you want after 60 or 70 hours of work is to come home and have to deliver whatever it is that you're selling through the weekend!

What about Affiliate Marketing?

So what business models might work around your job? Affiliate marketing is a great one to start with. As an affiliate, you promote products or services for other businesses, and get a commission. You can do this, without having to do any procurement, storage and no fulfilment or delivery obligations. As an affiliate, the amount and variety of products, or services you can promote or sell is unlimited. The beauty of this model is that you can sell products that you like, and are proud of, many times over, 24/7, 365 days a year. So even when you're at work or sleeping, you are busy growing your income as you grow your sales - now that's how you build a secure future!

Selling with E-commerce

Another option is to sell physical products with an E-commerce business.

With physical products, you don't have to reinvent the wheel. You can order existing products in bulk at a fraction of the cost and then set up a sales system. Once again, you want to avoid paying in advance for the products, accepting delivery and storage responsibilities, and then figuring out, at your cost, how to get the products to your customers ... and then there is it problem of returns and rebates.

Opportunities, like Amazon FBA, will do the heavy lifting for you. They will process the payments from customers and deal with the packaging, distributing, and customer service. In the meantime, you'll get busy selling the products and setting up marketing and ad campaigns to make those sales happen – which you can do around your job in just one or two hours a day.

Something to consider as you go into this:

Whatever you're selling, the first dozen or so sales will be the hardest. But once you've seen the change in your bank balance following these first sales, you'll gain the confidence that you can rinse and repeat ... and grow! You'll learn how many sales you need to make, each week and each month, to have a steady business and eventually, replace your income. If that time looks too long for your liking, then you increase your sales, of increase your product line to meet your deadlines - the important thing is that you are in control of your destiny.

People always want a concrete answer to that question, "how long is it going to take?" There is a huge diversity and it can range anywhere from a couple of days to a year or more, to make those first dozen or so sales. It all depends as much on whether you chose the right product for the current market, and your commitment to learning the digital skills you need to succeed.
